A colloid, or sol, is a stable dispersion of particles. In other words, the particles are small enough that gravity doesn’t cause them to settle, but large enough not To pass through a membrane, allowing other molecules and ions to pass freely. Particle size ranges from 1-100 nm, usually in the region of 5-100 nm. Silica sol belongs to a colloid.
